What brings you here?
Tingling fingers.
Interrupted sleep. Everyday frustration.
Numbness & tingling
Carpal tunnel symptoms often affect the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and thumb side of the ring finger. Tell us exactly which fingers are involved.
Nighttime symptoms
You may wake with tingling or numbness, especially after sleeping with a bent wrist. For example, symptoms can also occur while holding a phone or driving.
Grip & hand function
Clumsiness, difficulty handling small objects, or dropping things deserves assessment. In addition, increasing thumb weakness is a reason to seek prompt evaluation.
Persistent numbness or worsening weakness needs attention. See when to seek medical care.
Know what is being treated
Carpal tunnel syndrome
is a nerve-compression problem.
The median nerve passes through a narrow space at the wrist called the carpal tunnel. Pressure on that nerve can therefore cause altered sensation, pain, and weakness in the hand.
Several factors can contribute, including wrist position, pregnancy-related swelling, and certain health conditions. For this reason, symptoms should be assessed alongside your health and daily activities.
Not every tingling hand is carpal tunnel.
Other nerve problems, including those at the elbow or neck, can produce hand symptoms. However, the little finger is usually spared in carpal tunnel syndrome. A different pattern may point to another cause.

Your first visit
Start with the pattern.
Check sensation and function.
Tell us which fingers feel different, when symptoms occur, and whether you have noticed weakness. Before your visit, gather previous nerve-test results, relevant imaging, and details of treatment you have already tried.
We discuss your findings and an appropriate plan. If the diagnosis is uncertain, nerve conduction studies, sometimes with EMG, or ultrasound may help clarify the findings.
-
First, listen to your history
Review symptom timing, sleep disruption, hand use, medical conditions, and prior care.
-
Next, assess relevant findings
Examine sensation, thumb strength, and the wrist, with other areas considered when indicated.
-
Finally, choose & review a plan
Discuss suitable options and when testing or specialist evaluation would be helpful.
Individualized support
Acupuncture and integrated care,
guided by your findings.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture may be discussed as an adjunct for symptom support. For example, research has explored electroacupuncture, nerve function, and symptom changes. We tailor treatment and needle selection to your comfort. Explore acupuncture.
Myofascial release
Gentle soft-tissue work may address coexisting forearm or surrounding muscle discomfort. Throughout care, pressure is adjusted to sensitive areas and your tolerance. The goal is supportive comfort, with ongoing attention to nerve function. Explore myofascial release.
Chiropractic care
Your chiropractor considers suitable wrist movement support and any separate neck or arm concerns. For example, mobilization or other techniques depend on your assessment. Assessment helps distinguish nerve compression at the wrist from separate neck or arm problems. Explore chiropractic care.
A coordinated approach
Symptom support and movement, considered together.
When appropriate, acupuncture, gentle manual care, and home guidance can be integrated into one plan. We review nighttime symptoms, sensation, and hand function rather than relying on pain relief alone.
In addition, your plan may include a neutral-position night splint or medical evaluation. Persistent compression can require a hand specialist’s care; supportive treatment should not delay that step.
Research in context
What does acupuncture research show?
Between visits
Practical steps
for daily comfort.
Ask about a night splint
A properly fitted splint can keep the wrist in a neutral position during sleep. Also, ask which type suits your symptoms. It should feel comfortable and should not cause extra numbness or pressure.
Adjust aggravating tasks
Reduce prolonged wrist bending, forceful gripping, or vibrating-tool use when they trigger symptoms. Discuss workable changes to your tasks and take brief breaks as needed.
Use guided movement
Ask whether gentle nerve or tendon gliding is appropriate. However, stop if the recommended technique increases symptoms. Track sleep, tingling, and hand function between visits.
Helpful answers
Carpal tunnel syndrome questions.
Symptoms & sensation
Which fingers are usually affected by carpal tunnel syndrome?
Typically, symptoms affect the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and thumb side of the ring finger. In contrast, the little finger is usually spared. This pattern helps guide assessment, but symptoms alone do not confirm the diagnosis.
Why are symptoms worse at night?
Sleeping with the wrist bent can increase pressure on the median nerve. As a result, a suitable night splint may help by keeping the wrist neutral. Persistent nighttime symptoms deserve assessment.
Is carpal tunnel the same as wrist pain?
No. Carpal tunnel involves pressure on the median nerve. However, tendon irritation, joint problems, and injuries can also cause wrist pain. Visit our Wrist & Hand Pain page for broader symptoms.
Treatment & testing
Can acupuncture help carpal tunnel symptoms?
It may be considered for adjunctive symptom support. Studies have explored electroacupuncture and nerve-related measures, but results do not establish that every patient benefits or that the underlying compression has resolved.
Can acupuncture and chiropractic be combined?
Yes, when suitable after assessment. Acupuncture may be discussed for symptom support, while chiropractic and soft-tissue care address appropriate movement or coexisting muscle concerns. We also monitor sensation and strength.
Do I need an EMG or nerve conduction test?
Not everyone does. History and examination may be enough to identify the condition. When needed, testing can clarify an uncertain diagnosis, evaluate severity, or investigate other nerve problems.
Daily activities & pregnancy
Does typing cause carpal tunnel syndrome?
Typing alone does not establish the cause. Several factors can contribute. Tell us about symptoms during computer use and other activities so we can discuss practical changes without assuming a single cause.
Can carpal tunnel happen during pregnancy?
Yes. Pregnancy-related swelling can increase pressure at the wrist. Although symptoms sometimes improve after pregnancy, ongoing numbness or weakness still needs assessment. Tell your provider if you are pregnant.
Planning your care
When might I need a hand specialist or surgery?
Severe or persistent symptoms, thumb weakness, muscle wasting, or signs of nerve damage may need specialist assessment. A hand specialist can discuss whether release surgery is appropriate. There is no requirement to exhaust supportive treatments first.
Is treatment covered by insurance?
Coverage depends on your plan, the service, and medical necessity. Therefore, request verification before your visit. Standalone massage is self-pay; coverage for integrated care must be checked for your plan.
