Understand the treatment

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture uses very thin needles placed at selected points on the body. It is rooted in Chinese medicine and is also studied as an approach to symptom management.

At Blissful Wellness, your doctor chooses a treatment approach after discussing your health concerns and examining relevant findings. Acupuncture may be recommended on its own or alongside other appropriate care.

Your comfort matters

Different needles.
A personal approach.

We stock eight different needle sizes, giving your doctor options when planning treatment. The size selected depends on the treatment area, the technique, and your individual needs.

Tell us what feels comfortable.

Your doctor can adapt the approach and discuss a gentler starting point if you are nervous about needles. Needle size is one part of comfort; placement, technique, and your own sensitivity matter too.

Let us know about needle anxiety, previous experiences, or a history of fainting. You can ask questions, request a pause, or ask your doctor to adjust treatment.

We aim for a comfortable experience, but we do not promise that every treatment will be sensation-free.

More than one approach

Acupuncture techniques we offer

Your doctor recommends a technique based on your evaluation, treatment goals, and preferences. You do not need to choose a style before your first visit.

Traditional acupuncture

Fine needles are placed at selected points using a Chinese medicine approach. Point selection and treatment are individualized.

Trigger-point acupuncture & dry needling

A muscle-focused approach that targets tender trigger points. It uses the same type of fine needle as acupuncture, with a different approach to selecting the treatment sites.

The sensations may differ from other styles. Your doctor explains what to expect before you consent.

Electroacupuncture

A controlled electrical current is applied through selected acupuncture needles. Your doctor discusses the sensation and adjusts the stimulation to your tolerance.

Tell us about a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device before treatment.

Auricular acupuncture

A form of acupuncture using selected points on the outer ear. It may be incorporated into your plan when appropriate.

Your doctor explains why it is being recommended and what the treatment involves.

A closer look

What electroacupuncture looks like

Small leads connect to selected needles to deliver controlled electrical stimulation. Your doctor explains the sensation and adjusts treatment to your tolerance.

Electrical stimulation is an option when appropriate for your evaluation; it is not needed for every acupuncture treatment.

Different techniques are options—not a promise of better results. We discuss the expected benefits, limitations, and alternatives with you.

What brings people in for acupuncture?

These are common reasons patients seek an evaluation at our practice. Listing a concern does not mean acupuncture is appropriate for everyone or equally effective for every condition.

Pain & movement

Back and neck pain, muscle tension, headaches, migraine, and joint discomfort.

We discuss how symptoms affect sleep, work, and daily movement—not just a pain score.

Pain & injury concerns

Women’s health

Menstrual discomfort, PMS, pregnancy-related concerns, menopause symptoms, and support during fertility care.

Your stage of life, medical care, and treatment goals guide the conversation.

Our approach to women’s health

Stress & wellbeing

Stress, disrupted sleep, digestive discomfort, fatigue, and low energy.

We consider whether symptoms need further medical evaluation before or alongside supportive care.

Whole-body wellness concerns

Useful information, realistic expectations

Where does the research stand?

Evidence varies by condition. Your response also matters.

Research suggests acupuncture may help some people with back or neck pain, knee osteoarthritis pain, and certain headaches. It does not work for everyone, and benefit varies.

For many other concerns, evidence is limited or mixed. We discuss those limits and monitor whether care is helping your goals.

Your first appointment

Know what to expect before you arrive.

You don’t need to know which points or technique you need. Bring your concerns and questions; your doctor will help you understand the options.

Visit our New Patients guide
  1. Talk through your concerns

Discuss symptoms, medications, prior treatment, relevant medical history, and what you hope to improve.

  2. Evaluate and explain

Your doctor assesses relevant findings, discusses whether acupuncture is appropriate, and explains the proposed care before you consent.

  3. Treatment at your pace

If treatment proceeds, let us know how you feel throughout the visit. Tell your doctor if you want a pause or an adjustment.

  4. Choose the next step

Review your response and a proposed follow-up plan. Frequency depends on your condition and progress; there is no one schedule for everyone.

A meaningful part of our practice

Support through changing stages of life.

Our practice welcomes women seeking care for menstrual discomfort, pregnancy-related concerns, menopause symptoms, and support while trying to conceive or undergoing fertility treatment.

We discuss your symptoms and coordinate the approach with your existing medical care. Please tell us if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or are receiving fertility treatment.

Acupuncture does not guarantee conception or improved IVF outcomes. Research has not established a benefit over sham acupuncture for pregnancy or live-birth rates with IVF.

The Blissful Wellness approach

One team. A broader view of your care.

Our doctors are licensed in both acupuncture and chiropractic. That helps us consider your concerns through more than one clinical perspective and explain which options may fit your needs.

When appropriate, care may also include chiropractic, myofascial release, cupping, Chinese herbal medicine, or Kinetic Pulse Wave. Additional services are recommendations to discuss, not an automatic part of every acupuncture visit.

Comfort & safety

A few things to tell us before treatment.

Share your medications and supplements, bleeding disorders, blood-thinner use, pregnancy status, and implanted devices—especially if electrical stimulation is being considered.

Acupuncture can cause temporary soreness or bruising. Serious complications are uncommon but possible, so technique and safety precautions matter. Needles should be sterile and single-use.

Do not delay medical evaluation of new or concerning symptoms to try acupuncture.

Common questions

Acupuncture FAQs

Does acupuncture hurt?

Sensations vary. You may feel a brief pinch, pressure, heaviness, or an ache. We stock eight needle sizes and can adapt the technique to your needs. Tell your doctor about sharp or uncomfortable sensations so treatment can be adjusted. We welcome questions and needle concerns.

Do I need to choose an acupuncture style when booking?

No. Book an acupuncture evaluation and discuss your concerns with your doctor. We offer traditional acupuncture, trigger-point approaches and dry needling, electroacupuncture, and auricular acupuncture. Your doctor explains which options fit your evaluation and goals before treatment.

How many appointments will I need?

There is no fixed number for every patient. Your doctor recommends a starting plan based on your symptoms, history, and goals, then reassesses your response. Ask when progress will be reviewed and what would lead to a change in plan.

Can I combine acupuncture and chiropractic care?

They may be combined when both are appropriate for your examination findings and goals. Your doctor will explain the recommendation and alternatives; you can discuss your preferences before consenting.

Can I have acupuncture while pregnant or trying to conceive?

Tell us before treatment so your doctor can review your circumstances and adapt recommendations. Acupuncture is supportive care, and it does not replace prenatal care or fertility evaluation and treatment.

Will insurance cover acupuncture?

Coverage depends on your plan and the condition being treated. Some PPO plans with out-of-network benefits may cover care. Submit your insurance information for verification before treatment. Verification does not guarantee payment; you remain responsible for amounts your plan does not pay.

How much does treatment cost, and how long is a visit?

Contact our office for current fees and appointment lengths for an initial evaluation or follow-up visit. Ask what is included and whether any recommended additional service has a separate fee. Call 909-276-7168.

Do I need to stop my medications?

Do not stop prescribed medication for an acupuncture appointment unless your prescribing clinician directs you to. Bring a current medication and supplement list so your doctor can consider safety and coordinate recommendations.
