Understand your care

What is cupping therapy?

Cupping therapy uses suction to gently lift the skin and underlying soft tissue. Cups are placed over selected areas while you rest or move under your clinician’s guidance.

We use cupping to address muscular tension and help you work toward more comfortable movement. The treatment area, suction, and session are tailored to your symptoms, preferences, and response.

Cupping may help some people with pain, but research is limited. Your response can vary, and we discuss whether it fits your care plan.

Find your starting point

Stationary cupping or MRT cupping?

Both use suction. The main differences are the intensity and whether you move during treatment.

Stationary cupping

A more comfortable introduction to cupping. You rest while the cups remain in place over the selected treatment area.

  • Usually a gentler starting point.
  • No guided movement while the cups are in place.
  • Suction adjusted to your tolerance.

A good option if you are new to cupping or prefer a quieter session.

MRT cupping

MRT stands for Muscle Release Technique. Pioneered at our clinic by Dr. Michael Sun, this approach combines cupping with guided movement and stretching.

  • Stronger suction and a more intense sensation.
  • Movement adds a stretching or pulling feeling.
  • Focused work toward your movement goals.

In our clinical experience, MRT can produce a quicker change in movement for some patients. It is not a guarantee of faster results, and stronger treatment is not right for everyone.

Comfort comes first

Start with the approach that fits you.

You do not need to progress to MRT to receive cupping care. Tell us if the pulling sensation feels too strong, and ask for an adjustment or a pause at any time.

Your clinician checks the treatment area and discusses your health history before choosing the technique. Tell us about sensitive skin, medications, recent procedures, and previous reactions to cupping.

Cupping with movement

See MRT cupping in action.

This short clinic demonstration shows how guided neck movement is combined with cupping.

MRT feels more intense than stationary cupping because stronger suction is combined with movement. Your clinician guides the range of motion and checks how you feel.

Common questions

Cupping questions, answered.

Does cupping hurt?

Stationary cupping usually feels like pulling or pressure. MRT uses stronger suction, and movement adds sensation. Tell your clinician if it is uncomfortable so the treatment can be adjusted or stopped.

Will cupping leave marks?

Temporary circular discoloration can occur where the cups were placed. The amount and duration vary. Marks do not measure treatment success or show that toxins have been removed.

Is MRT cupping better than stationary cupping?

The best approach depends on your goals and tolerance. MRT is more intense and includes movement; stationary cupping is a more comfortable starting point. You do not have to choose MRT to benefit from a cupping visit.

Is cupping covered by insurance at Blissful Wellness?

No. Our cupping appointments are self-pay and are not billed to insurance. Please check the current fee when booking.

How many visits will I need?

There is no fixed number for everyone. Your clinician recommends a plan based on your symptoms, goals, and response, and reassesses whether continuing treatment is useful.

Can cupping be combined with other care?

Yes, when appropriate. Our clinicians can discuss how cupping fits alongside acupuncture, chiropractic care, or myofascial treatment. Cupping remains a self-pay service.
